MARTINE WENGROW (she/her)
BMus (Hons) Composition, AYMF
A pianist and composer from a young age, Martine holds an Honours degree in music composition from the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, a teaching qualification from the Yamaha Music Foundation, and has studied conducting and musicianship under internationally renowned maestri John Hopkins and Dobbs Franks. Martine is currently studying a Masters of Professional Practise: Voice Pedagogy through the Voice Study Centre in London, through the University of Wales Trinity Saint David.
She is an experienced arranger and educator, and has taught or musically directed for Victorian College of the Arts, Federation University, Box Hill Institute of TAFE, the Defence Force School of Music, Trinity College at the University of Melbourne, and the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music.
Martine’s writing experience is broad, from having modern classical compositions workshopped by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, to preparing and editing scores for big-name musical productions Muriel’s Wedding – The Musical, and the recent Storeyboard Entertainment touring production of Chess. She regularly arranges and orchestrates for such television programs as Dancing With The Stars, The XFactor Australia, Australian Idol and Name That Tune for FOX Broadcasting USA, and performs frequently with comedy improv troupes The Big Hoo Haa, Impromptunes and Murder Village.
Passionate about vocal pedagogy, vocal health and performance, Martine has studied under renowned vocal experts Tim Smith and Naomi Eyers, and has just completed a three- year tenure in the position of Associate Musical Director of the Australian Male Welsh Choir. She specialises in teaching voice, musicianship, aural skills, and music theory.
Musical theatre and cabaret are Martine’s favourite forms of performance art. She loves to utilise her varied skills in the pursuit of creating and contributing to shows that inspire, move, and bring joy to both adults and children alike.
Most recently, Martine has worked with the graduating musical theatre cohort of the Victorian College of the Arts, and in 2021 was engaged as assistant musical director Storeyboard Production’s Australian tour of Chess.
Other theatre credits include musically directing, arranging and orchestrating Some Enchanted Evening – The Songs of Rodgers and Hammerstein, Gene & Judy for JTM Productions, and The Show Goes On by Bernadette Robinson and Richard Carroll. She was associate musical director and chorusmaster for Music Theatre Melbourne’s inaugural production of Paris: A Rock Odyssey, and musical director for the Melbourne season of Violet for Blue Saint Productions.
Other professional credits as a pit musician, copyist or repetiteur include Wicked (XRoads Live), Cinderella (XRoads Live & Opera Australia), 9 to 5 The Musical (XRoads Live), Muriel’s Wedding – The Musical (Global Creatures), Barnum – The Circus Musical (Storeyboard Entertainment & JTM Productions), Avenue Q (Prince Moo Productions), CATS Australian/New Zealand tour (Really Useful Group), and The Lion King (Disney).
